Grand Parkway Smiles can properly assess and advise you regarding the best approach to creating the ideal beautiful white smile. The first step to whitening your smile is to have your dentist assess your individual dental health to create a plan that achieves that perfect smile. In many cases, an “in-office” whitening procedure may be all that is necessary to achieve an optimum result.
It is important to understand that teeth come in many natural shades. Some natural shades respond more favorably to teeth whitening than others. While yellow hue’d teeth will often respond well to teeth whitening treatments, brownish or grayish hued teeth may respond less favorably. It is also important to assess whether teeth may have pre-existing bonding or tooth colored fillers which will not respond to whitening agents. Whitening agents when applied to teeth with bonding or tooth colored fillers will typically produce a non-acceptable result. If you have bonding or tooth colored fillers, then porcelain veneers may be the better alternative. Grand Parkway Smiles will make these assessments during the treatment planning phase prior to any teeth whitening procedures. Start by speaking with your dentist. He or she can tell you whether whitening procedures would be effective for you. Whiteners may not correct all types of discoloration. For example, yellow-ish hued teeth will probably bleach well, brownish-colored teeth may bleach less well, and grayish-hued teeth may not bleach well at all. If you have had bonding or tooth-colored fillings placed in your front teeth the whitener will not affect the color of these materials, and they will stand out in your newly whitened smile. You may want to investigate other options, like porcelain veneers or dental bonding.
Techniques and alternatives:
In-Office Whitening: This procedure typically requires one office visit. Our dentist will apply a protective mechanism (gel/rubber shield) to your gums, and then apply the bleaching agent to the teeth.
Home bleaching: We can alternatively make customized bleaching trays which can be used at home and worn to bed. This procedure involves adding a peroxide whitening gel to the tray and then inserting the tray into the mouth for 4-8 hours, time may vary. Potential side effects with this approach can include gum irritation and tooth/gum sensitivity.
Whitening toothpastes and strips: Toothpastes will help remove surface stains of the tooth enamel utilizing various degrees of mild abrasive compounds. Whitening toothpastes and strips will contain low levels of whitening agents which may provide some stain removal but will typically not whiten the teeth. Only use over the counter products which are ADA approved.
