You’ve probably come across videos of people acting all funny and loopy after a wisdom teeth extraction. But have you ever wondered why the procedure is necessary in the first place? Why not just keep the teeth? Well, wisdom teeth extraction procedures may be more necessary for one’s oral health than you may think.

Why You Might Need a Wisdom Teeth Extraction

There are several reasons your dentist may recommend the extraction of one or more of your wisdom teeth. Some of these reasons include:

  • Create more room for molars
  • Prevent damage to surrounding teeth, jawbone, or nerve damage
  • Align teeth and jawbone
  • Prevent infection or spread of bacteria
  • Prevent gum disease
  • Prevent cysts or tumors
  • Improve overall oral health

Not only does a wisdom teeth extraction present all these benefits to a person’s health, but it also alleviates any discomfort a person may be feeling due to wisdom teeth coming in. There will be no more pain because of wisdom teeth once the procedure is done!

The Wisdom Tooth Extraction Procedure

If you get the feeling that you may need a wisdom teeth extraction, you may be curious about how the wisdom teeth extraction procedure works.

Following a thorough exam and consultation, your dentist will ensure your comfort during the surgery using one of the following forms of anesthesia:

  • General anesthesia: This form of sedation is typically given through an IV in your arm. You will not be conscious during the procedure if sedation anesthesia is used and you’ll likely wake up without any memory of the surgery.
  • Local anesthesia: You already know this type of anesthesia from getting fillings and minor dental work done. The local anesthetic is injected one or more times around the extraction sites. Don’t worry about the injection hurting, though! Before the injection takes place, your dentist will apply a numbing substance to numb the area.
  • Oral sedation: This type of anesthesia is given in pill form just prior to surgery. You’ll be conscious enough to follow the dentist’s simple instructions but you’ll feel no discomfort and likely have no memories of the procedure.

Once sedation has taken effect, the dentist will start by making an incision in your gum to access the root of the tooth/teeth and jawbone. The wisdom tooth will then be cut into pieces so it will be easier for the dentist to take out. The pieces of the shattered tooth will be removed and the dentist will finish up by cleaning the extraction site before stitching it up. Gauze will be placed in your mouth to stop any bleeding and then you’re finished!

Wisdom teeth extractions are more necessary and beneficial to a person’s oral health than some may think. Not only can it prevent diseases, tumors, and infections from forming in your gums and teeth, but it can keep your smile looking straight and healthy!
