What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is used to help patients relax during dental procedures, this is achieved with the use of different medications depending on the desired effect. You will sometimes hear this called sleep dentistry while in most cases this is an incorrect term; patients in most cases are conscious during the procedure just in a relaxed state. In some procedures it is necessary for Deep Sedation or even General Anesthesia.
What are the Different Levels of Sedation Available?
Sedation is typically grouped in 4 different levels they are:
Minimal Sedation – This level has the patient awake but relaxed this is usually achieved either by inhaled means or by pill.
Moderate Sedation – Some refer to this as conscious sedation. At this level a patient will slur their words and have a difficult time remembering the procedure.
Deep Sedation – At this level the patient is on the edge of being conscious at this level the patient is not aware that the procedure has occurred.
General anesthesia – At this level the patient is completely unconscious and requires intubation
