What are single tooth dental implants?
Single tooth Dental Implants are a component to replacing a missing tooth. Dental Implants and a porcelain dental crown can be utilized to replace the natural affected tooth. The dental implant and dental crown replaces both the lost natural tooth and its root.
What are the Advantages of a single-tooth implant over a bridge?
Dental Implants provide several advantages over alternative approaches to tooth replacement. The dental implant looks and functions like a natural tooth. It also replaces a single tooth without sacrificing the health of neighboring teeth. The other common alternative to implants is to utilize a tooth-supported fixed bridge, which requires that the adjacent teeth be ground down to support the cemented bridge. A dental implant will replace your tooth root, and better preserve the bone structure. Alternative methods which utilize a bridge will cause some of the bone that previously surrounded the tooth to resorb (deteriorate). An advantage of dental implants is that they integrate with your jawbone, helping to keep the bone healthy and intact. The long term advantage to a single implant is that it provides the best aesthetic result and is easier to keep clean than a bridge. With a bridge, gums often recede around a bridge, which leaves a visible defect when the metal base or collar of the bridge becomes exposed. Deteriorated or “resorbed” bone beneath the bridge can lead to a lesser aesthetic result and often an unattractive smile. Additionally, the cement holding the bridge in place will often wash out, consequently allowing bacteria to decay the adjacent teeth that anchor the bridge.
How are Implants Placed?
The first step: The dental implant, which looks like a screw or cylinder, is placed into your jaw. During the following two to six months, the dental implant and the bone are allowed to bond together which forms an anchor for your artificial tooth. During the two to six month bone ingrowth period, a temporary tooth replacement “crown” is placed and worn over the implant site. The final step: We attach the permanent, replacement tooth which is called a crown. The crown is attached to a small metal post, called an abutment, which is a component of the dental implant. The end result: You will experience restored confidence in your smile and your ability to chew and speak. Dental implants look and feel natural, so much so that you may forget that you had ever lost a tooth.
