What are single tooth dental implants?

Single tooth Dental Implants are used to replace missing or damaged teeth, they are considered a permanent solution and are meant to last a lifetime. A dental implant procedure involves 3 parts the dental implant, the abutment (screws into the dental implant and what the porcelain tooth is affixed to and finally the crown which is porcelain tooth designed to look just like your natural teeth. The dental implant and dental crown replace both the lost natural tooth and its root. Patients who want to smile again, eat the foods they enjoy choose and prevent further bone loss chose dental implants in our Katy Tx. Cosmetic Dentistry Center.

What are the Advantages of a single-tooth implant over a bridge?

Dental Implants are the preferred method for permanent tooth replacement. The dental implant looks and functions like a natural tooth. A dental implant is the closest to your natural teeth and does not impact the surrounding teeth. The other common alternative to implants is to utilize a tooth-supported fixed bridge, which requires that the adjacent teeth be ground down to support the cemented bridge. A dental implant will replace your tooth root, and better preserve the bone structure. Alternative methods which utilize a bridge will cause some of the bone that previously surrounded the tooth to deteriorate.

An advantage of dental implants is that they fuse to your jawbone becoming permanent much like your natural teeth this helps to keep the bone healthy and intact. The long term advantages to dental implants is that they look just like your natural teeth, they are permanent and you just need to brush your teeth to clean them versus having to remove a bridge and clean it. Over time gums can also begin to recede around the bridge, which leaves a visible gap when the metal base or collar of the bridge becomes exposed. Deteriorated bone beneath the bridge can lead to an unattractive smile and other dental problems. Because cement is used with a dental bridge it can often wash out, which allows food and bacteria to decay the adjacent teeth that anchor the bridge.

How are Implants Placed?

The day of your implant procedure at our Katy Tx. Cosmetic Dental Center.

First step: We take additional 3D images of your mouth to ensure the exact direction and placement of the dental implant. If there is a damaged tooth it would be extracted at the time of your procedure. Then the exact dental implant is selected to maximize the most secure use of your jawbone to secure it. It is then placed into your jaw and the top of the implant is given a barrier to prevent your gum from healing into the implant.  You will go home that day and typically the pain is minimal after the anesthesia wears off because the implant goes into bone, most pain is treated with over the counter medications like Motrin. You will also go home with a temporary tooth that you can remove for cleaning. We typically you will come back in within 2 weeks after your procedure for a brief follow-up we can check the implant placement again and see how the healing process has begun.

Second step Most patients healing time is about 12 weeks, the implant and the bone are allowed to bond or fuse together to form an anchor for your artificial tooth. Following the 12 weeks you will come back and we will take additional x-rays to ensure that your implant has properly healed. We will then expose the implant so that we can take impressions for the custom abutment and crow. Those will be fabricated to exact specifications to match the width, color and length of your tooth.

The final step:  We then will attach the custom abutment and then the  permanent replacement tooth which is called a crown. Your Katy Tx. Implant Specialist will ensure that your crown fits and looks just like your natural teeth.

The end result:  You will experience restored confidence in your smile and your ability to chew and speak. Dental implants look and feel natural, so much so that you may forget that you had ever lost a tooth.
